What the 'NKH' patch on the Kansas City Chiefs jersey stands for

The wait is over. The NFL returns today with last year's Super Bowl winners, the Kansas City Chiefs, taking on the Detroit Lions.

Arrowhead Stadium will play host to the first game of the 2023 season, with the home team wearing a patch with the initials 'NKH' in gold letters and in a football.

But what is the meaning behind it? The Kansas City Chiefs announced that they will wear the patch all season in honor of Norma Knobel Hunt, who passed away on June 4, 2023.

"We will remember her as the loyal wife, loving mother and a passionate football fan. Her zest for life and passion for the sport will live on in our hearts and the minds of the entire Chiefs Kingdom," the team said in reference to the franchise founder's partner.

The initials 'NKH' will be located on the right side of the jersey, and will complement the left patch that has been a tradition since 2007 in honor of Lamar Hunt, 'LH'.

Norma Hunt Super Bowl Champion of Education Program

To go with the patch, the Kansas City Chiefs revealed the creation of a program that will carry Norma Hunt's name starting with Super Bowl LVIII which will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For the campaign, the NFL will select a teacher to attend the game and honor them for their work and commitment to education.

It should be noted that Norma Hunt always showed her passion for education and set a Super Bowl attendance milestone, as she was the only woman to attend each one of them since the first edition.

That dates back to when the Chiefs lost to the Packers, until Super Bowl LVII, when her team, led by Patrick Mahomes, defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Arizona.

Norma began her career as a high school teacher, and after earning a bachelor's degree in education from North Texas State University in 1960, she returned to her alma mater at Richardson High School (Richardson, Texas) to work as an American history teacher.

She met Lamar in 1963 and the two were married for more than 40 years.
