Today is the first day of spring also known as the Vernal equinox.  This is a day when day and night time hours are equal in length.  This seasonal tipping point have been observed for thousands of years and given rise to a considerable body of seasonal folklore.

One belief, attributed to the Chinese, is that raw eggs will stand on end on the first day of spring. This comes from the notion that special gravitational forces apply on the equinox. This is not true.  Why does this same effect not observed on the autumnal equinox?  Why can’t you balance hot dogs?

It seems you can balance an egg on end any day of the year.  All you need is a little salt.  sprinkle a little salt on a table and it makes it much easier to stand an egg on end.
