Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed the signing of Marco Asensio on a free transfer.

The Athletic reported last month that the forward had agreed to join PSG after his contract with Real Madrid expired, and he has now arrived on a three-year deal.

Asensio had a long-term agreement in place with the French side and is expected to earn €10million (£8.5m) per year between salary and bonuses with the Ligue 1 club.

The Spain international opted against extending his stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, despite a proposal from the club, and also turned down strong interest from Premier League club Aston Villa, who were prepared to offer a lucrative alternative.

“It’s a privilege to be part of this great club,” Asensio told PSG. “I’m looking forward to joining my new teammates and working with them to achieve some great goals.”

Asensio spent seven years in Madrid after signing from Mallorca in 2014, winning 17 major trophies: three Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, four Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, three Spanish Super Cups and one Copa del Rey.

He has made 50 appearances for the La Liga side last season, scoring 12 goals and providing eight assists.

PSG earlier confirmed the arrival of Slovakia captain Milan Skriniar on a free transfer after leaving Inter Milan.

The club are conducting a summer squad refresh under new boss Luis Enrique, with Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos leaving.
