Garo Sparo Biography
Garo Sparo is an American designer from New York City whose real name is Gary Spampinato who is a contestant on Bravo’s Project Runway in its 17th season.
Garo is the head designer at Garo Sparo, an American couture design house based in New York City.
He is also a television personality who has starred on Unleashed by Garo on the Sundance Channel.

Gary is 42 years old as of 2019. He was born in 1973.
Garo Sparo Family
Garo’s immigrant mother and grandmother taught him how to sew. His family had a lacemaking company based in Sicily.
However, when his family moved to America, his father began working in the Garment District in Manhattan, while his mother “took custom orders for anything she could sew.”
“There was always a sewing room in our house. I was the only kid in the family allowed in there.” Garo said.
Garo’s brother, Paul, died in a plane crash in 2000, but he still inspires the designer: “Paul was my hero… a huge part of my life and who I am as a person. He cheered me on as a young designer.”
Garo Sparo Designing
Garo is originally from northern California but later moved to Bay Shore, New York in 1995 to chase his designing dream. He showcased his design at Absolut Alternative Fashion Week.
In the year 2000, he opened the Garo Sparo Boutique on St. Mark’s Place in Manhattan.
By then, he began to focus heavily on corsetry and custom couture. Garo’s clientele rapidly grew to include many burlesque and drag icons such as Miss Understood, Hedda Lettuce, Angie Pontani, World Famous *BOB* and Sequinette.
Garo also has many clients who collect his custom day and evening wear such as fashion icon Daphne Guinness.
His designs have also been featured in commercials, films, dance performances, and art installations.
Garo is the resident designer for New York production company and sister organization Screaming Queens Entertainment.
Garo Sparo Unleashed by Garo
Unleashed by Garo is a six-episode television series about Garo and the world of fashion and design.
The series debuted on Sundance Channel in both the U.S. and Canada on September 9, 2011.
In each episode, three clients visit Garo’s New York City studio. Participants vary from society brides looking for unique gowns to performers seeking stagewear.
Garo Sparo Project Runway
Garo specializes in corsetry, couture, and made-to-order bridal. He also designs and fabricates costumes for a wide variety of performers as well as commercial and film clients requiring sculptural and special effects-based work.
Garo has so far made it to episode 9 of Project Runway’ s season 17. He was the winner of episode 9 of the show.
