Looking for some new post-hardcore bands to sink your teeth into? Let us introduce you to Denver’s Owleye. The band is vocalist Tim Graham, lead guitarist David Sundine, rhythm guitarist Dave Garner, bassist Brad Stewert, and Frankie Woronoff on the drums. Hailing from Denver, Colorado and formed in late 2013, Owleye drew its members from bands active in their local music scene.
With its members coming from a range of different backgrounds, Owleye has created a sound completely unique to the band. Their music ranges from calm and melodic to full of gut-wrenching, powerful emotion. The band released their most recent EP ‘No Wounds’ on April 1st 2016. The EP was Graham’s first project with Owleye, but the band has taken no hits from a change in line-up. The EP’s success opened the door to a new, more dedicated era of Owleye.
Who better to introduce you to the band than the members themselves. Here’s what they had to say:
CelebMix: For people who aren’t familiar with Owleye, how would you describe your sound?
I would say old school post-hardcore with a new look.
CelebMix: Would you say your music has a message? And if so, what is it you want people to take from your album, or seeing you play live?
This is a tough one. We don’t have a single or so direct message, like some bands that have “hope” as their message. Our music is what helps us deal with our personal demons and situations that life brings to our doorstep. Our current EP ‘No Wounds’ talks about so many different things: from self-destruction to break ups to losing loved ones and taking those things and learning from them to push forward in life. All I know is that there will be one song on there that someone will relate to.
CelebMix: Tell us the Owleye story—how did your band come to be?
This is always a funny short story. It started over free pie Wednesdays at the village inn. We all decided that we wanted to start a band together that day and here we are.
CelebMix: What would you say has been the most exciting moment of your career so far?
I think our EP release for ‘No Wounds‘. We played ‘Cycles’ which is the last track from the EP at a show and people were singing the words back to us. It was a pretty humbling moment.
CelebMix: If you could play a show with anyone—dead or alive—who would you pick?
I think I would love to play with either Underoath or Saosin. They are a pretty big influence and some of my favorite bands.
CelebMix: Who are your favourite bands at the moment—who influences you?
The ones that are on repeat for me currently are Silent Planet, Demon In Me, The Color Morale and Emarosa.
CelebMix: And most importantly—Charmander, Squirtle, or Bulbasaur?
Charmander all the way.
